The Department of Applied Literacy is a new department which was formed in May, 2006. This Department focuses on developing the literacy skills of Gallaudet students. We are a department consisting of six faculty members who share a passion and love for teaching, learning, English, signed languages, and critical thinking.
Our goal is to have exciting classes where students actively involved in learning language, have a place to share their experiences, develop new experiences, and help each other learn in a collaborative, cooperative way. We feel the Department of Applied Literacy has many opportunities for you to grow academically in unique and exciting ways.
Learning Opportunities
DAL works closely with Academic Advising, the Career Center, and TIP in order to provide comprehensive support to our students as well as provide career development skills.
Mission
The Department of Applied Literacy (DAL) provides students with experiences and opportunities to develop the English skills and strategies necessary to succeed academically at Gallaudet University. DAL has a strong commitment to bilingual education using American Sign Language (ASL) and English. In conjunction with General Studies, DAL instructs and supports students as they develop skills in reading, writing, and critical thinking through an outcomes-oriented curriculum.
